MSA OUTDOOR CLASSIC
This is the second year of the revitalization of the MSA Outdoor Classic, a tournament local hoopers competed at in the 1980s. The organizers of the tournament donate all proceeds to the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice Society, the City of Abbotsford provides support with bleachers and court rental, local businesses alleviate the costs of the tournament by providing resources, media coverage from Abbotsford Basketball Association, all together it demonstrates the power of collaboration. 6 teams of local hoopers attended the second annual event, ranging from college teams to sponsored teams.
The final of the 2017 MSA Outdoor Classic had Westcoast versus Private Barbershop. Private Barbershop entered the tournament as favourites to win, with a roster including professional players Kenny Otieno (Professional Player), Joel Friessen (Yale Secondary Alumni/NBL Canada Professional Player), Marek Klassen (Yale Secondary Alumni/European Professional Player). Westcoast’s Klaus Figueredo led the way, hitting a barrage of 3-pointers and contested floaters in the key throughout the game. Klaus’ 24th point brought Westcoast within 4 points with minutes to go in the second half, but Private Barbershop’s arsenal of Kenny, Joel and Marek executed like professionals should.
Private Barbershop win and are back-to-back champions of the MSA Outdoor Classic.
All proceeds from the event go to the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice Society – this year the MSA Outdoor Classic raised $3,500. If you would like to support the MSA Outdoor Classic, please contact us by e-mail.
